I got an email offering the inland marine insurance coverage.

Does anyone know what specifically is offered by this coverage? If the speeder falls off the trailer? If the speeder is vandalized or stolen while I'm shopping in Wally World? How about while I'm on the rails, does it cover damage due to a derailment, or an accident of some sort?

I had similar questions last year, gave them a call and got them answered. I recommend you call them rather than rely on going by what I think I or someone else's translation of the coverage.

I did a little nosing around with the provider, and it appears to me that this is a pretty good policy. According to my exchange of emails with the company, it includes coverage for a lot of risks, including damage while the car is in operation on a railroad, for theft, certain types of damage while in storage, damage while being transported, etc. It appears that it even covers the expense of re-railing if the car requires it. Of course, everything is subject to exclusions, and by all means, DYODD (do your own due diligence).

The person to talk to is Martha Babcock at United Shortilines Insurance, 989 738-6400, marthbabcock@shortlineins.com.

Can any of the insurance gurus weigh in on this?

They also have an 800#:

United Shortline Insurance Services
Phone: 800-247-2085 or 989-738-6400
Fax: 989-738-6557

This is from an email I posted on the NARCOA Forum lastyear:

From talking with the representative I learned that only a small percentage of
the people carrying NARCOA liability insurance carry this additional coverage. I
hope the business is sufficient to continue it.

Since it is offered directly by the company there is less publicity about the
policy, and people may not be aware of the offering.
